It should be noted by all Faculty, Students and Staff that it is the policy of the American Conservatory of Music not to accept any reference from the Wikipedia.com as authoritative. Students and faculty are advised that Wikipedia.com may only provide a starting point for their research, yet they should not accord to Wikipedia any final authority no matter what the subject. The Dean observes that Wikipedia.com is a free-for-all collection of writings from untrusted sources and allows updates from anyone with an internet connection. Below is an excerpt from WIKIPEDIA.COM's disclaimer.
"WIKIPEDIA MAKES NO GUARANTEE OF VALIDITY
Wikipedia is an online open-content collaborative encyclopedia, that is, a voluntary association of individuals and groups who are developing a common resource of human knowledge. The structure of the project allows anyone with an Internet connection and World Wide Web browser to alter its content. Please be advised that nothing found here has necessarily been reviewed by professionals with the expertise required to provide you with complete, accurate or reliable information.
That is not to say that you will not find valuable and accurate information in Wikipedia; much of the time you will. However, Wikipedia cannot guarantee the validity of the information found here. The content of any given article may recently have been changed, vandalized or altered by someone whose opinion does not correspond with the state of knowledge in the relevant fields...."
"Wikipedia's visionless, self-selected, value-light online encyclopedia is a deformed shadow of what the global public deserves, says former editor-in-chief of Encyclopaedia Britannica, Robert McHenry."
Is Wikipedia a Viable Source for College Papers?
A false Wikipedia 'biography' by John Seigenthaler, Editorial/Opinion appearing in USA Today, November 29, 2005.
WIKIPEDIA.COM made unrestrained provably false statements about the American Conservatory of Music which had been corrected, but which now have been vandalized by an unqualified editor. The Conservatory appreciated WIKIPEDIA.COM for making the corrections, then, and now requests that a qualified editor remove the vandalized additions.
The following sites mirror Wikipedia.com without any editorial review: ANSWERS.COM and REFERENCE.COM. The same policy as applies to Wikipedia content also applies to those mirror sites as well.
